Valentines for 2012

It's 2012 and Valentine's Day is just around the corner!

Today I introduced my first collection of spun cotton ornaments for Valentines Day.

If you don't already know, I have a customer email list and they get first dibs on my newest creations. If you have interest in getting on that list, please contact me so you can get your email added.

Most of these pieces were sold this afternoon in a flurry of email requests, but I still have two pieces left, which if I have no requests, they will be listed for sale in my Etsy Shop this weekend.

This "Gentleman Bunny" is still available and will be going into my Etsy Shop sometime this weekend. Of course, if you have interest, you can contact me directly.

#2 Wee Valentine Bunny is also still up for grabs.

I'm so grateful to those who responded to my email sale!

I've packaged all the ornaments in pretty little packages tied up with bows and they are ready to travel to their destinations, near and far!!!!

Spun Cotton for a Wedding

Something new from me that I'll be adding to my creations in 2012 will be personalized wedding pieces made in the spun cotton.

I've done many special request pieces for various collectors, however, this is my first attempt at a wedding piece.

In mid December I received a request to do a personalized spun cotton ornament for a New Years Eve wedding from a customer who is very special to me. She gave me some ideas as to the theme of the wedding, some lines from a song, the colors and that she has always loved the way I create my bunnies, so she suggested a pair of spotted hares.

My creative juices started flowing and I immediately started making a spun cotton basket. With a basket I knew it could be displayed many different ways and be used not only as a hanging ornament but also I make my baskets so that they can stand on their own so it could also be used as a cake topper.
Next came the spotted bunnies and trying to keep a gentle hand on the shading so as to keep the cuteness factor ;-)

My attention to details have gained me accolades from my customers and I have to smile as I watch someone pick up a piece and discover first, the obvious, and then the subtle, then the smiles that come across their face.

I met with my customer yesterday to personally deliver this creation and we sat and chatted over a wonderful lunch. When I presented her my creation, I watched as she discovered the details and saw her smile grow across her face......that is priceless in my book!

I truly love what I do and I'm grateful to all who keep me inspired to push forward and stretch my creativity and imagination.

Wishing everyone joy for a Happy Holiday season!

I'm down to the wire putting final touches on my handmade creations for the family, wrapping all the packages, preparing the menu for the feast and hopefully have some time to clean up the cobwebs and those pesky dust bunnies.

I can tell that my husband, Jim, is feeling much better today after his surgery as he has placed this yard decoration in our front yard! Our "Skelly Ho-Ho" dashing with Blitzen!

Halloween night and the WINNER is....

This years yard decorations had to be scaled back a bit due to the snow and the ground being so wet. Many trick or treaters look forward to our annual display and they come for a little scare all in good fun! There are many who pause at the end of the walk, which was lighted with luminaries this year, then bravely make the decision to "come forward" by the voice on a hidden microphone reassuring them and saying "don't be afraid"!

Like the piped piper, our Halloween soundtrack and the addition of a new sub-woofer, draws them in like little zombies and they make their way to our house.

We did not disappoint and a good scare was had by all! Our theme this year centered around the giant spider which hung above the door and the display which everyone favored were the little babies wrapped up in the webs.

Happy Halloween was had by all!!

Everyone who came left with their treat bags full and complimented that we have "the best house ever"!!!

Inspiration from a Vegetable Oddity

Every year we always look for the surprise of finding the oddity from the vegetable garden.

Today, while picking the veggies, I came across this little one. It's a single cherry tomato that mutated into three. I'm calling them "The Conjoined Triplets" and I've once again found inspiration in nature as I've got an idea for a new spun cotton ornament!

Pitter Patter Paws

The sound of little pitter patter paws and tiny meows can be heard coming from our home! Two weeks ago, we adopted not one but two adorable little kitten boys!

On one of the frequent visits to our local Pet Smart, I discovered these two little faces peering out at me from behind bars.

Now....I ask you....would you be able to resist these two? It took all of two seconds to win me over!

So we busted them out of jail and brought them into our home!

We announced to the neighborhood with balloons ;-})

We've given them the names of "Bandit" and "Nitro". We call them "brothers from different mothers" as they get along with each other so well.

Forever in our Hearts

Sadly, in the early morning hours of this past Sunday we said goodbye to our Squire. His life of 19 years was filled with spirited adventures and we have volumes to write about his antics that I'm sure any cat lover would love to read and maybe even be a best seller.

Today our house seemed so empty and quiet without him as he was known to be sure we would wake by 6 a.m. each day with his howling bengal voice. Having morning coffee without him snuggled in the arms of my infamous pink robe, working in my studio and not seeing him napping in his doll bed, it's all just so strange as this is the first time in our 33 years of married life that we've not had a cat in the house.

We had decided that Squire's final resting spot should be under our lace cap viburnum as this was his favorite place to hid when he was outside. This bush actually was re-named by our daughters and has always been known to us as the "ambush" because Squire would be hidden inside just waiting for a little critter to scurry past.

I know that our future will include another little fur face and it will be just a matter of time when one walks into our lives.

After my first adventure in that giant Ebay ocean, I'm feeling like I've advanced from doing the doggy paddle to now getting into a canoe and ready to hit the waters once again!

Of course I made some mistakes with my first listings and hopefully I'm on the right course now and I've just listed 2 brand new spun cotton ornaments AND got my ebay ID updated to my business name. The "Marie" tree

One of my "uber sweet" customers who has been collecting ornaments from me has honored and surprised me by decorating one of her Easter trees this year exclusively with my creations and she calls it the "Marie Patterson" tree!

She took these pictures and gave her permission for me to share them on my blog with you.

In this picture below my tree is in great company with a smiling rabbit named Wendell by Laurie Hardin! What an awesome Easter vignette!

Her collection includes my work in spun cotton, needle felting and sculpted paper clay.

The "Wee Wabbit Wacers" in their wittle wace car were a favorite of mine ;-}

New spun cotton ornaments and a large spun cotton art doll!!!

I still have a few little tweeks to accomplish with these ornaments, then they'll be available for purchase!

My Mr. Grey Hare is a spun cotton art doll and was inspired by memories of a family easter basket which was brought out each year to be used for our annual egg hunt. It was decorated with frills and ruffles sewn in that beautiful peachy/pink tulle and ribbon and I've used that color palette in this piece. As you can see from this picture, I'm still sewing the ruffled collar and there will be painted eggs in around the bunny and he will hold that cute little bunny pick in his paw.

UPDATE: These are now all SOLD! I'm in the process of making more so please keep watching for the next update! Thank You!!!

I'm always trying to improve on my technique for these spun cotton ornaments and always open for suggestions. One suggestion was to try and make them a bit smaller so that they would be proportionate for a old german styled feather tree. So I set off to challenge myself and these are some of the results. Working small is not as easy as one might think and actually takes a great deal more time.

It's been quite awhile since you've heard from me, hey!!!
The holidays flew by without much grandeur as this year there were no decorations here at the Patterson's to accompany the Christmas festivities due to some much needed house renovations (there will be some pictures to share in a future post). However the constant sound of hammers and seemingly endless drywall dust has not totally kept me away from the studio table and I've managed to get some creative work accomplished.
A little while ago I had posted a work in progress picture of a couple of spring bunnies and now they are 5. I'm hoping to have some time tomorrow to list these in my Etsy Shop.

Not everyone knows the legend of the Krampus, so here's a bit of some of information I found while researching this spun cotton ornament which is highly prized by collectors.

The Krampus – Likely derived from the Yule Goat, the Krampus [from the Old High German krampen "claw"] is a demonic figure of the Alps (Austria, Bavaria, Switzerland, and Slovenia) that still exists today and is known by several names. He is often portrayed having goat legs, long horns, a long goat beard, and a sack or basket used to carry away children. He is a companion of Saint Nicholas and appears in the streets at night during the first two weeks of December (focused around the Day of Saint Nicholas) – frightening children and adults, clattering bells and chains [perhaps the origins of Santa Claus's bells], and swatting youngsters with switches. He is often portrayed as a servant of Saint Nicholas and his task is to punish naughty children: leaving a lump of coal, swatting children with a birch switch or broom, or dragging them away in his sack.

While walking with a friend in Lambertville, NJ we came upon this jaw dropping yard display that is unlike anything I've ever seen!

I wished that this was installed for the weekend of the STJ Soiree, because Pat Dean and I walked on this street and we would have seen this!!!

I noticed that there are black lights all throughout the display, so I guess I'm going back after dark some night! PLUS, I'd love to meet the artist who created these awesome sculptures!

Antiques: Vintage Halloween collectibles can be scary valuable

Past or present, decorating with grinning jack-o'-lanterns, spooky black cats, and flying witches is the best part of Halloween.
In the final months of 2010, antique toy collectors will be bidding on a dazzling selection of holiday offerings. The list includes something for everyone: vintage Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations, as well as cast-iron banks, old cars of every description, and, of course, regiments of toy soldiers.
Philadelphia is at the center of the toy-collecting world. Morphy Auctions in Denver, Pa., near Lancaster, stirred up the spirits of the season when it had excellent results with Halloween material in an 887-lot Holiday Sale on Sept. 11.
Old Halloween decorations have increased in value because so few survive in good condition. Candy containers and colorful cutouts made of fragile materials often were discarded after each holiday.
Spooky lanterns designed to hold a candle were often made of flammable papier-mache or pressed cardboard. No surprise, a near-mint-condition devil's-head lantern from Germany brought $4,600 at the Morphy sale. Another unusual lantern in the shape of a human foot with a happy face on the sole sold for a hefty $10,350.
The top-selling item in the auction was a one-of-a-kind Halloween harvest novelty, also made in Germany. Probably a store display, the 17½-inch "veggie man" had a clockwork mechanism that shifted his eyes from side to side. The final price: $19,550.
Another standout lot was a very rare set of nodding figures with cat, devil, witch, and pumpkin heads, which sold for $10,350. "It's difficult to find a complete set of six," Dan Morphy said.
"They're made of celluloid, so they're fragile. This particular set was old store stock and had never been used. Remarkably, it was still in its original box with original paper label."
As this was an official "holiday" sale, the offerings included desirable Christmas Santa figures, candy containers, and ornaments. A 28-inch-tall Santa with clockwork nodding head and rabbit-fur beard was purchased for $10,350.

A Santa with sleigh and four reindeer was offered for purchase as a store display in the Schoenhut catalog for 1914. The rare group, featured in Schoenhut Dolls: A Collector's Encyclopedia by Carol Corson, sold for $5,750.
"The turnout for this sale definitely proved that Halloween and Christmas antiques are popular year-round collectibles," Morphy said. "We had more than 250 unique buyers, with approximately 100 of them bidding in the room and another 150 on the phones at various times during the session."
He said the sale also drew about 400 Internet bidders.

Our First STJ Soiree and Rave Reviews!

Saturdary was our 1st annual SpookyTimeJingles Soiree and it was a great success!!

We had collectors travel in from near and far just for the show and they gave us all a big "thumbs up" for producing such a quality show.

All who attended are so looking forward to next years event!

The #1 comment that everyone in attendance had to say was… "seeing the art first hand was a joy and gave them an even deeper appreciation for the talent of what they saw from all the artists."

Found: an awesome pair of shoes at a consignment shop

Bonus: these white fabric shoes looked they were never worn! And they were in my size....however the pointy toes made me say "ouch".

So the next obvious thing was to "alter" them as I immediately thought they looked like perfect witch shoes.

I finished one shoe for now which will be shown at the SpookyTimeJingles Soiree on Saturday, October 16th! The picture shows it used for business cards, but also could hold some Halloween treats in a table arrangement or some small spooky ornaments!

My PTO Day

Yesterday, September 1st, I granted myself a PTO (personal time off) Day to spend the day with my husband, Jim, celebrating our 31st wedding anniversary.

We pulled out the album and reflected back on the day and I created a collage to share some of the moments.

I can remember when my Mom took my hand as we were to start down the aisle and she looked at me and said, "Daddy's spirit is with us"!

Jim and I spent the day doing what we both enjoy by hiking in the woods by a nearby stream and enjoying nature.

Last time we hiked in this area, we collected the heart shaped rocks we found by the stream bed and since then I put them into a shadow box.

For those of you who follow me, you know that nature is my biggest source of inspiration and on this trip I once again looked at the rocks and I'd like to share with you what I saw. (click on images to enlarge)

Just me and my Trek

Recently there has been a nice change in the weather and my early morning bike rides have become so much more enjoyable and I've felt inspired to go on much longer rides. I got one of those little bike computers that records speed, mileage, time, and if that's not enough to make me push harder it even records calories burned! I get to have ice cream if I burn enough calories, right?

This little thing has become my little training buddy!

Yes! you do see a little orange ringy dingy LOL! It comes in handy with the pedestrians. ;-}

So I've got a plan to train for a charity ride and I'm setting my sights on next years City to Shore bike ride that benefits MS. (side note: I did do this ride many moons ago!)
Maybe even some of you will sponsor me?

Todays ride was just under 9 miles in 45 minutes ....not too shabby considering the terrain, which is not at all flat around here in Bucks County!

So you might just see me pedaling down the road.....don't beep as that just scares the bejeebers out of me!

Seriously, please be considerate of those of us on bikes and "Share the Road".

Spun Cotton Art Dolls are coming!

What is it about spun cotton?

I get asked this question frequently and I have to say that since I've been working with the cotton, I've found that I truly enjoy it and I personally just love the final vintage look and feel of the finished pieces.

It's been a road of discovery for me as I've developed my own technique for the creation of my spun cotton ornaments and now with my latest pieces which I feel are worthy of being called "art dolls" that will be offered for sale for the first time at the August 13th update on SpookyTimeJingles.

Yes, I've had those days when I've come out of my studio and there are bits of cotton stuck all over me and my fingers are covered in a wierd contorted cast of cotton and sticky glue and the cat looks at me and seems to say "don't you even think about touching me"!

Since those days, I've perfected my technique a bit and I don't get quite as messy! I find taking those big cloud like puffs of soft cotton and transforming them into art to not only be a challenge but it's quite rewarding as the characters take on their personalities.

Lately in my area of the country we've been in the midst of one heat wave after another, so I've replaced my daily power walk with bike riding. During the past few weeks I've spotted some very interesting things along the way.

This one day the clouds in the sky were huge billowy puffs and so many interesting shapes!

to me it's pretty obvious that this is a santa/witch head with HUGE hat on the head ;-} I'll be using this as inspiration for a future project!

Now awhile back I posted the picture that I took while walking and I did use it to inspire a needle felted figure

I call these shapes on the ground "nature's ink blots" and I always see things in them. On Facebook I asked the readers to post what they saw and got some interesting views.
(On my side bar is an article from Art Doll Quarterly with my quote on the "nature's ink blots") !!!

This past week I rode thru the old Newtown Cemetery

very interesting and made me stop to take a picture

so was the "come with me" on the stone before or after the wife's death? hmmmmm

a ride thru the streets of Newtown Boro is always a treat for the eyes

The ride back to my house is all uphill, so I'm always happy to see this sign.

it means that I get to take a break, sip some water and get ready for just ONE more big hill to get back home!

The following story is my way of having a little fun and an experiment in human awareness.

Three days ago while I stopped for this rest and drink of water, I spotted these acorns on the ground and thought how odd/cute that they were positioned just like this between that branch.

So as I was sitting there I thought to myself....I wonder if anyone else would ever see these little acorns and what if I took that sharpie pen from my bike bag and drew little faces on them....would someone then see them and take them home with a message?

Maybe it was just the heat getting to me, but I thought it would be fun....so this is what I left

Well, I'm very happy to say that when I made my stop here today....someone did see my little acorns and took them!!!!

these pictures were taken with my phone so you can't see clearly but in addition to the little faces, I also wrote
www.SpookyTimeJingles.com!!! So the person who took the acorns may now possibly be a new STJ fan!!!

I guess you can say that my experiment in human awareness worked and I have now done my very first "geocaching" (although I didn't post any coordinates on the web).

How to - Vignette inside an egg

In an earlier post I said that I'd share how I created my spun cotton vignette inside a real goose egg.....and here's my little tutorial.

Starting with a collection of large goose eggs that were in need of cleaning and sterilizing by blowing out the contents and soaking in a bleach solution.

As you can see, I penciled an oval shape for the cut out.

After sacrificing and egg to breakage, I found that the tool that worked the best is a dremel with a diamond cutting tip. So I first scored on my pencil line and then went on with the cutting while holding my dremel at a slight angle.

I made my little spun cotton bunny over a mini wire armature and placed it on a small cardstock disk, which I then used tweezers to insert and glue inside the egg.

When all trimmed out with vintage posies, ric-rack,ribbon,flocking....my finished egg was immediately grabbed by a collector!

Catching Up

It seems like ages since I've been able to actually read all the blogs and keep up with what everyone is doing.

The last weekend of February was my "annual girlfriends trip" to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt show in Hampton, Va.

This year at the show I was shopping for some supplies for my spun cotton ornaments and found a vendor with some beautiful organic cotton batting. While talking with her, she asked if I sold them anywhere online and when I mentioned the Spookytimejingles site, she smiled and said that she just loves that website and that she knows several of the artists!

Her name is Connie Hindmarsh of Vintage Romper Room Bears,Hares & Folk Art Dolls and is a fan of David Everett of Chicken Lips, Robin Seeber of Out of the Box Primitives, Ginny of Ginny Diezel Studios, Pam Gracia of Soft in the Head.

It was wonderful to talk with Connie and we exchanged business cards and now I'm added to her list of Spookytimejingles artists that she knows!

I asked a passerby to take our picture together.

This show offers quilters and all fiber artists supplies that sometimes are hard to find. I found some luscious new wool roving for needlefelting.....I absolutely love these colors.

My girlfriends and I always exchange our Christmas/Birthday gifts on this trip and this year Carol gave each of us an extra "gag gift"!

We raced our old ladies with walkers in the hotel lobby and had the hotel employees roaring with laughter!

Next year we will return with our ladies and we all decided that we would be creative and "personalize" them and have them ready to race again!

When I returned to Pa., my hubby and I went to the Philadelphia Flower Show for a beautiful taste of spring. The flowers were gorgeous and I even found a little bit of Halloween in the vendor area. You know I'm always on the lookout for anything pertaining to Halloween!

Art Doll Quarterly and My Doll!

Today, Feb. 1st, the Spring 2010 issue of Art Doll Quarterly is officially on the newstands!

Check this out!

Some of you may know that I'm a member of the Cloth/Clay workshop on Ning.com and as a group we submitted our dolls for this challenge. We were all so excited to hear that the magazine had accepted our dolls.

The challenge was to create a doll using recycled/upcycled materials. As a group we all made our dolls using the method taught in the workshop and then the rest was open for our individual expression.

I "upcycled" used dryer sheets and pages of magazines to create the dolls dress. I sewed LOTS of cut strips of the magazine and then fringed them and finally sewed them all to the dryer sheet base. The bodice also was made with collaged magazine pieces and the white trim is pleated dryer sheet fabric.

To keep with my upcycled theme, I used metal stamps and embossed the wording into the paper banner she holds in her hands.

For the new year I've learned some new techiniques that I'm very excited to show you.
SpookyTimeJingles will update on Jan. 13 (at midnight just as the clock ticks into the 13th EST) and in addition to the usual Halloween and Christmas art, there will be art for Valentines Day!!!

Here's a preview of what you'll see on my page.

In addition to sculpted clay, I've added wool needle felting and the "seldom seen" sculpted spun cotton!
So start the New Year off right and come by and have a look for yourself.

Ringing in the New Year with Spun Cotton

I'm feeling really good about my latest attempts at creating these spun cotton ornaments. I've taken "clouds" of cotton and "sculpted" it into a collection of ornaments.

This snowman titled, "Ringing in the New Year", is quite appropriate for the start of 2010. His features are sculpted into the cotton and the cotton batting scarf and sculpted hat are hand dyed.

Baby it's COLD outside!!!

Part of my daily routine is to get outside for my exercise walk, which is usually 4 miles, each day. I find it clears the mind and inspires me, so if I don't go I get into a creative slump.

Call me a Yeti, Sasquatch,...but it's COLD and WINDY here in our little part of the country this winter.

I had to find the right layering to deal with this cold....and the hat really works...
so if you happen to see this figure out walking, don't be afraid....it's only me!

Spun Cotton

For quite some time now I've been researching the history of the Old German Spun Cotton ornaments.

I've attempted my first ornament using my usual "trial and error" method. If you search for instructions to make these things, you'll come up against a wall as there isn't very much helpful information out there.

So here is my "Dancing in the Snow" snowman. I was inspired by Fred Astaire (notice the similarities?)

I listed him at my Etsy Shop and he sold within 2 hours!!! So I guess I can call this spun cotton experiment a success!

Why of course, it's a penguin! From the top of the curly hat to the tip of her tuxedo tail, she's just all cuteness and comes ready to hang on your holiday tree!

"My Thanksgiving Tree" - - I repurposed my wire Halloween tree on the mantel with a few glittered pumpkins and little glass nut ornaments. With my handmade primitive pumpkins and folk art turkey sitting at the base, I now have the perfect Thanksgiving vignette!

Our Halloween 2009

I promised pictures of Halloween, so here you go.....

In spite of the rain, Halloween night went on as scheduled. We just scaled back a bit on the outside electronics and decided to step up the window displays. About 120 trick or treaters in the misting rain! Next year we hope for clear weather.

The week before Halloween, Jim and I were invited to a costume party hosted by Dani of Ambitions Design and her husband, Michael.

Great time with Great people!!!! A Halloween to remember!

Tombstone Swap Event

Recently I participated in the 2nd Annual Tombstone Swap which Dani of Ambitions Design hosted and my partner was Jamie ofCreepy Creations. If you haven't met Jamie yet, you have to pop over to her blog and have a look at her wonderful creepy creations!

This is the tombstone that Jamie made for me! Her attention to the small details is awesome! I've given it a perfect place among my Halloween collectibles on the mantle and I'll be posting pictures of my vignettes soon.

And this is my tombstone which I created for Jamie. Knowing that she likes creepy, I went to my "dark side" and this creature came out of the clay.

It was unknown as to what species it was when it was buried and it refuses to R.I.P.! This is how I see creepy.

October travel

This past weekend was spent traveling with my girlfriends to New England.

Along the highway we passed the Great Pumpkin headed to what we thought would be a pumpkin weigh in contest.

I grabbed my camera and shot this while the car was traveling on I-95! Pretty good picture!

We made a stop in Mystic, Ct. to have pizza at the infamous Mystic Pizza (as in the movie with Julie Roberts) and sunset at the harbour offered me this scene.

The sunset and the ships masts reflecting on the water is my favorite.

We were even treated to a beautiful rainbow as we stopped at Chucky's for coffee.

We were headed into Newport, RI to spend time with our girlfriend, Sue,and the Newport harbour is always a sight to see.

Great time with a great group of friends!
