Trash to Couture

Upcycling is taking something that is destined for the trash bin and transforming it into something of value and beauty.




One of my favorite shows on tv is the Project Runway! I remembered one of shows where the designers challenge was using trash to come up with designs for their models.

For my project, which is for the Cloth/Clay workshop group submission to Art Doll Quarterly, I wanted to use paper. The challenge was how to transform it into a sewable dress for my sculpted doll. After many trials and errors, I came up with this design. She has a collaged magazine paper bodice and the skirt is strips of magazine sewn to dryer sheets....and little extra dryer sheet for her blouse trim. She holds a banner which is also made from magazine paper.

Now if I could make this for humans to wear....that would truly be "upcycling" at it's best! LOL!

Makes it all worthwhile!

Recently I was commissioned to create one of my "Girlfriends" art doll busts for a customer who would give it as a gift to her girlfriend. This was exciting for me to work on this personalized project as this is what I had envisioned when I created this girlfriend series..... inspiration, support, and the bond we have with our girlfriends!

The recipient of this gift responded with a touching email that I'd like to share a portion with you.

"She is wonderful - it's such a nice idea, and somehow so reassuring to have this figure looking at you and wishing you well, or consoling you or whatever you need. And in a way it's yourself, and that is really special, it supports you and reminds you to be good to yourself. It works, it makes me feel reassured or consoled or keeps me company. I'm reading a book, "How to heal your Life", and this doll totally fits into what I'm reading as it's about changing your thought patterns about yourself from not helpful - blame, guilt, criticism, etc., etc. - to ones good for you!"


As many online artists know, we don't always "hear" what is said about our creations after they leave our hands, so when you get a response like this one it really does make my day and makes it all worthwhile!

YUMMY! Chocolate Goodness!



Just made these OH SO GOOD "Chocolate Sour Cream Cupcakes" from the Clean Eating magazine! How do I know they're good? Well since this was the first time making this recipe I made a few "samplers" to test. The recipe used words like rich, dense, moist....they were right! AND the bonus is that they are a much HEALTHIER version!!!
You can eat "clean" and still have your chocolate.

New "Girlfriends"

Just completed a new set of "Girlfriends" which are art doll busts sculpted in paperclay over a cloth body.



One of these girls is already spoken for and will be headed to Vienna and the remainder will be listed in my Etsy Shop soon!
