Spun Cotton

For quite some time now I've been researching the history of the Old German Spun Cotton ornaments.

I've attempted my first ornament using my usual "trial and error" method. If you search for instructions to make these things, you'll come up against a wall as there isn't very much helpful information out there.

So here is my "Dancing in the Snow" snowman. I was inspired by Fred Astaire (notice the similarities?)

I listed him at my Etsy Shop and he sold within 2 hours!!! So I guess I can call this spun cotton experiment a success!

Do you see Polka Dots?

What is black and white and just adores bright pink polka dots?

Why of course, it's a penguin! From the top of the curly hat to the tip of her tuxedo tail, she's just all cuteness and comes ready to hang on your holiday tree!

This ornament is one of my creations offered at the special event known as "The 12 Days of Christmas" being held at SpookyTimeJingles!

Come by and check out all the great new creations made especially for this fantastic event!

......that's not all.....you also get an extra special bonus with any purchase...

The week before Halloween, Jim and I were invited to a costume party hosted by Dani of Ambitions Design and her husband, Michael.

Tombstone Swap Event

Recently I participated in the 2nd Annual Tombstone Swap which Dani of Ambitions Design hosted and my partner was Jamie ofCreepy Creations. If you haven't met Jamie yet, you have to pop over to her blog and have a look at her wonderful creepy creations!

This is the tombstone that Jamie made for me! Her attention to the small details is awesome! I've given it a perfect place among my Halloween collectibles on the mantle and I'll be posting pictures of my vignettes soon.

And this is my tombstone which I created for Jamie. Knowing that she likes creepy, I went to my "dark side" and this creature came out of the clay.

It was unknown as to what species it was when it was buried and it refuses to R.I.P.! This is how I see creepy.

October travel

This past weekend was spent traveling with my girlfriends to New England.

Along the highway we passed the Great Pumpkin headed to what we thought would be a pumpkin weigh in contest.

I grabbed my camera and shot this while the car was traveling on I-95! Pretty good picture!

We made a stop in Mystic, Ct. to have pizza at the infamous Mystic Pizza (as in the movie with Julie Roberts) and sunset at the harbour offered me this scene.

The sunset and the ships masts reflecting on the water is my favorite.

We were even treated to a beautiful rainbow as we stopped at Chucky's for coffee.

We were headed into Newport, RI to spend time with our girlfriend, Sue,and the Newport harbour is always a sight to see.

Great time with a great group of friends!

Tutorial on Creating a Halloween Tree

Recently I was having a conversation with a friend who said she doesn't buy any ornaments for Halloween because she feels that the trees are too expensive.
I thought that I could make one for little or no cost. So I'm sharing these instructions and if you need a tree, this idea might work for you.

Here's the list of supplies:

Tree branches - look around your yard or go for a walk in the park (think spooky branches)
Container - this can be a vase, bucket, tin, basket, etc. I used a green glass vase which I already had.
Floral foam, or sand - this will go into the base of the container and support the branches.
Decorative berries - these are optional, but I liked the color they added.
Fabric - anything that "speaks Halloween" to you will do....it will be used for draping the container

O.K. Step #1 is assemble your supplies.

Step #2
Arrange the branches in your container and add some decorative element. I used the berries, however some garland or even tissue paper would work.

Step #3
Create your scene. Set your tree where everyone can enjoy it. I liked these spooky Halloween gauze fabric pieces which I draped on the mirror and around my vase.

Step #4
Start filling your tree with the Halloween ornaments that you can now start collecting! You can even put lights on your tree!
My Halloween Spinners are shown here and there are still a few available on my page at SpookyTimeJingles!

I still have alot of decorating to do on this tree, but you get the idea! Now go out and look for some branches and build yourself a tree.

My Moment of Fame!

The Sep/Oct 2009 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors should be at the book stores Sept. 1st! This issue is packed with amazing Halloween art from many talented artists and I'm honored to be included in this magazine. Thank you to the staff at Cloth Paper Scissors!

On page 14 is where you'll find my submission for what I call my "Halloween Spinners" and that's me on the top half of this page.

The ornaments are double sided and they spin freely to show each one-of-a-kind face. This set has skulls on one side and my goblins on the other side. Unfortunately, they didn't have space in the magazine to show the flip side of all the ornaments.

If you're interested in having a "Halloween Spinner" of your very own before they are offered in any of the marketplaces, please contact me for special pricing. My contact link is on the side bar.

Happy Birthday!

It's hard to believe that 26 years have past by so quickly since the day my second baby girl, Jenny, was born on August 17th. You were born at 2:53 a.m. and weighing 7 lbs.,9oz, and 21-1/2" long. I wrote in your baby book that your older sister, Laura, thought of you as her new doll baby! I guess you'll always be her little "bean"!

Here you are at only one month old sleeping quietly as you always did....

You've grown up to be a successful and beautiful young woman and your Dad and I are very proud of all your accomplishments!

We love you! {{Happy Birthday Hugs}} Mom & Dad

We're counting the days 'til we come see you!

Trash to Couture

Upcycling is taking something that is destined for the trash bin and transforming it into something of value and beauty.

One of my favorite shows on tv is the Project Runway! I remembered one of shows where the designers challenge was using trash to come up with designs for their models.

For my project, which is for the Cloth/Clay workshop group submission to Art Doll Quarterly, I wanted to use paper. The challenge was how to transform it into a sewable dress for my sculpted doll. After many trials and errors, I came up with this design. She has a collaged magazine paper bodice and the skirt is strips of magazine sewn to dryer sheets....and little extra dryer sheet for her blouse trim. She holds a banner which is also made from magazine paper.

Now if I could make this for humans to wear....that would truly be "upcycling" at it's best! LOL!

Makes it all worthwhile!

Recently I was commissioned to create one of my "Girlfriends" art doll busts for a customer who would give it as a gift to her girlfriend. This was exciting for me to work on this personalized project as this is what I had envisioned when I created this girlfriend series..... inspiration, support, and the bond we have with our girlfriends!

The recipient of this gift responded with a touching email that I'd like to share a portion with you.

"She is wonderful - it's such a nice idea, and somehow so reassuring to have this figure looking at you and wishing you well, or consoling you or whatever you need. And in a way it's yourself, and that is really special, it supports you and reminds you to be good to yourself. It works, it makes me feel reassured or consoled or keeps me company. I'm reading a book, "How to heal your Life", and this doll totally fits into what I'm reading as it's about changing your thought patterns about yourself from not helpful - blame, guilt, criticism, etc., etc. - to ones good for you!"

As many online artists know, we don't always "hear" what is said about our creations after they leave our hands, so when you get a response like this one it really does make my day and makes it all worthwhile!

Got Chocolate?

YUMMY! Chocolate Goodness!

Just made these OH SO GOOD "Chocolate Sour Cream Cupcakes" from the Clean Eating magazine! How do I know they're good? Well since this was the first time making this recipe I made a few "samplers" to test. The recipe used words like rich, dense, moist....they were right! AND the bonus is that they are a much HEALTHIER version!!!
You can eat "clean" and still have your chocolate.
Check out the "Clean Eating" magazine!
These are headed to our annual 4th of July Family Reunion.

p.s. Want this Recipe??? Contact me and I'll send it to you.....my little contact thingy is on the sidebar!

HAPPY 4th of JULY to ALL!!!!
